We don’t gate-keep secrets about how our products are made, and we don’t use any fancy ingredients or proprietary blends.
Our philosophy is to create products with the most bioavailable and highest-quality ingredients, and to be completely transparent on what our products contain and how they’re made. We also seek to share our understanding of the relevant science and research in public so that we can all make more informed choices about our nutrition and the products we choose to consume.
Keen amateurs and nutrition enthusiasts will be able to replicate something close to our formulation at home. The same can’t be said for some other supplement companies out there…
Here is a basic recipe to make the unflavoured Drivn Hydration Mix base that has all the electrolytes and amino acids you need:
Hydration Mix Base Ingredients
- ½ a teaspoon of salt (provides about 1000mg of sodium);
- 500mg of potassium chloride (provides about 250mg of potassium);
- 300mg of magnesium gylcinate (provides about 40mg of magnesium);
- 1000mg of creatine; and
- 500mg of L-Taurine.
We decided on this recipe by reading the sports nutrition and hydration literature, and choosing ingredients that provided a clear nutritional benefit with little to no side effects. All of these ingredients are bioavailable and there is quite a low risk involved with taking too much (as your body has internal systems to bring you back towards homeostasis if you overshoot in the wrong direction).
You can get the ingredients to make this mix from Amazon, iHerb, or other nutraceutical supply stores. Mixed in water, this recipe will taste salty and have no flavour.
Adding Flavour
You can take this unflavoured base mix and create delicious flavours by adding certain ingredients. What you’ll need is something for 1) sweetness, 2) sourness/acidity, and 3) flavour.
For sweetness, the following are good options:
- Stevia (a small amount, to taste; depends on what type of stevia you use)
- Erythritol or monk-fruit sweetener
- If you’re happy to have carbs with your electrolytes, then consider using:
- Maple syrup
- Honey
- Fruit juice
For sourness and acidity, choose one of the following:
- Citric acid
- Malic acid
- Lemon or lime juice
For flavour, consider the following:
- Fruit juice (e.g. orange, banana, watermelon, mango, pear, grapefruit) or blended-up berries
- Cucumber and mint
- Chai
- Chocolate
While making these recipes we recommend you taste as you go, mix thoroughly and enjoy served over ice. You can even make your own powders ahead of time, or make a large liquid mix to enjoy throughout the week. Or you can buy our products if you like our flavours and prefer the convenience!
Whatever route you decide to take, increasing your electrolyte intake will likely leave you feeling more focused, sharp, and with more energy to tackle your goals and life’s challenges. This is especially important if you’re highly active or someone who sweats a lot.
